Scot Davis ’74 Hall of Fame induction reported by Owatonna People’s Press

Todd Hale recently wrote about the impressive wrestling and coaching career of 2015 Augsburg Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Scot Davis ’74 in an article for the Owatonna (Minnesota) People’s Press. During the three years between 1971-74 that Davis wrestled for Augsburg, the team had a record of 49-4-1 and each year the team was ranked in the Top 10 teams nationally. Davis went on to be the head wrestling coach for the Owatonna High School. He now holds the national record for career wins as a high school coach with 1,046.

Hale also pointed out that Davis coached 2011 Augsburg Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Matthew Kretlow ’91 during his time in Owatonna.

Hibbing Daily Tribune touts Mike Fuenffinger as
Wrestler of the Year

The Hibbing Daily Tribune wrote about Mike Fuenffinger ’15, a Hibbing native who recently won his second consecutive NCAA Division III national title while wrestling at Augsburg College. He also was named outstanding wrestler of the NCAA tournament and then was named the NCAA 2015 Division III Wrestler of the Year.

Battle of the 'Burgs to include special wrestling reunion

wrestlingThe Augsburg College wrestling program will celebrate the history of three championship teams with a reunion celebration on Friday, Feb. 4 as a part of the team’s dual with Wartburg College, a highly anticipated meeting also known as the “Battle of the ‘Burgs.”

Dubbed the “Reunion of Ones,” the Auggies will celebrate the 1961 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship team — Augsburg’s first of its 30 MIAC team championships — and its 1991 and 2001 NCAA Division III national championship squads prior to the Auggies’ dual meet with Wartburg.

The Augsburg-Wartburg match will begin at 7:30 p.m., with the three championship teams honored on the mat during intermission (after the fifth bout of the evening).

In addition to the Augsburg-Wartburg match, there will also be a high school dual meet between Coon Rapids and Albert Lea that will begin at 5 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.

Auggie wrestlers in Central Asia

wrestling Six members of the Augsburg College wrestling team traveled to Central Asia for a 15-day training, mission, and service trip. Four Auggie wrestlers, two coaches and four other wrestlers were in central Asia from May 25 to June 8, training in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and Dushnabe, Tajikistan. In addition to training and competing, the wrestlers did mission and service work, along with visiting historical and cultural sites in the two countries. Winter sports wrap

wrestling2Wrestling — Claiming a top-four finish in the team standings for the 20th straight year — a record currently unmatched by any other NCAA wrestling program in any division — the Augsburg wrestling team finished third at the NCAA Division III National Championships. Augsburg claimed five All-Americans, marking the 20th straight season that Augsburg has had five or more All-Americans and 22nd time it has accomplished the feat in its 26 seasons of NCAA competition.

The Auggies completed their first season under new head coach Sam Barber, who had served as an assistant under former head coach Jeff Swenson for the previous six seasons. Augsburg finished 10-2 in dual meets, placed third at the NWCA Division III National Duals, and won the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional for the 6th straight year. Auggies take third at wrestling championships

wrestling2The Augsburg Wrestling team scored a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships on Saturday evening at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Augsburg earned 87 team points in its third-place finish at the championship, marking the 20th straight year that Augsburg has earned a top-four finish in national competition — the longest current consecutive streak of top-four finishes of any NCAA wrestling program, regardless of division. Wartburg (Iowa) won the national title with 147 points and three national champions, while Wisconsin-La Crosse was second with 100 points and two national titlists.

Augsburg College’s Seth Flodeen (JR, Cannon Falls, Minn.) claimed an individual national title at 125 pounds.  Flodeen battled back from a 5-0 deficit in the opening minutes of the match to capture the title. Flodeen is the 43rd wrestling national champion in Augsburg program history — a record 39th in NCAA competition for Augsburg. Continue reading “Auggies take third at wrestling championships”
